The German Physicists‘ Tournament (GPT) is a competition where students have to work on open physics problems. At the tournament, a team presents their approach that that then is criticized by another teams, and has to be defended in a discussion. The GPT is the national qualification competition for the International Physicists‘ Tournament (IPT) where teams from all over the world discuss the different approaches.
The GPT is supported by a network that is coordinated from Erlangen. Furthermore, in recent years, many of the GPTs took place in Erlangen or were organized from Erlangen.
Study Service Center Physics
The Study Service Center (SSC) Physics serves as the first point of contact for almost all question concerning the studies of Physics in Erlangen. It is intended to support students, schools and prospective students. Michael Schmiedeberg from the Soft Matter Theory Group is part of the team of the SSC.
How do you measure the remaining charge of a battery with non-invasive purely mechanical methods? What is the best way to stabilize beer foam? How can you actually built a Maxwell’s Demon in a two-dimensional macroscopic system? What are the analogs of the essential components of a laser in a water ...
Before the end of last year Jonas Buba and Mishael Derla successfully finished their master theses.
Jonas Buba developed a classical density functional theory for active particles. With this method he studied the collision of hard active particles, which is important to understand the phenomena o...
Using a Phase Field Crystal approach we have studied the behavior of grain boundaries in periodic and aperiodic crystals that are composed of patchy colloids. In case of periodic structures we find that the energy cost of a grain boundary is hardly affected by the preferred binding angles of the pat...
For students who are interested in a theses in the Soft Matter Theory Group there is a new video for the UPhUF (Unsere Physik - unsere Forschung, our physics - our research) event. In addition, there will be a poster session on July 2nd, 2025 at 3pm in front of lecture hall HG.

A team from Erlangen successfully participated in the German Physicists' Tournament (GPT) and reached the final. The team finished 3rd after teams from Aachen and Munich.
The GPT 2025 took place in Heidelberg. The GPT is a competition where students have to work on open physics problems. At the t...
Colloidal particles can form network-like structures that slowly change in time. The dynamics of such gels varies a lot such that some gels are fluid-like while others are solid. However, the structural differences might be small .
In a new article we show that neural networks nevertheless can di...
