We are happy that our new publication entitled „Fracton and topological order in the XY checkerboard toric code“ just appeared as a letter in Physical Research Research.  A very nice piece of work by LEP members Maximilian Vieweg and Kai Phillip Schmidt.

Why is it interesting?

👉 Everyone in Quantum knows the toric code as a paradigmatic model for topological quantum order, quantum memory, and in particular for quantum error correction. In our work we introduce the XY checkerboard toric code (XYTC) as a generalization of the conventional toric code with two types of star operators and two anisotropic star sublattices forming a checkerboard lattice.

👉 The quantum phase diagram is deduced exactly, displaying topological and fracton phases with exotic properties.

👉 The properties of the fracton phase such as subextensive ground-state degeneracy can be analytically deduced from the degenerate limit of isolated stars.

👉 Fracton physics and codes are less known but will likely play a more important role in Quantum in the future.
