Congratulations to Lennard Kossmann, Anna Milano, Lars Radtke, and Marco Zech for successfully defending their theses

In the Soft Matter Theory Group a lot of theses have been completed and defended this spring.

Lars Radtke studied Atmospheric Rivers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in his Master thesis. Atmospheric Rivers play a crucial role in the global distribution and transportation of moisture and are often linked to extreme precipitation events. While extreme precipitation intensifies with global warming, the relative contribution of atmospheric rivers remains uncertain. Lars Radtke studied projected atmospheric rivers from simulated integrated water-vapor transport in a multi-model ensemble. Marco Zech tackled the question whether phasonic flips in quasicrystals can be detected automatically by graph neural networks, i.e., based on a graph representation of such quasicrystals, and in particular which geometrical properties of such excitations will be relevant. Anna Milano investigated flip induced tile rearrangements in quasicrystals. A tile-based analysis was introduced in which the orientation of the tiles is encoded through complex phases that respect their rotational symmetry. This approach allows structural changes caused by flips to be quantified and their directional contributions to be analyzed. The framework enables systematic investigations of flip processes and provides a basis for computational studies of larger regions.
